Splitting hairs
Walking through the cereal isle the other day, I was struck by an odd thought. We have so many choices in our lives--choices in cereals, cars, clothes, careers, etc. Yet despite all of these choices, many of them are really just the same thing or very nearly the same thing. Take Cheerios (which I love) for example--there's regular Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios (the best), Fruity Cheerios, Chocolate Cheerios, and then various generic versions as well. It seems like a lot of variation but in reality they are all just small tweaks on basically the same thing, and my enjoyment from cereal to cereal is not going to be drastically different--I will pretty much enjoy them all nearly the same. How many other things in our lives are like that? Clothes, cars and houses are definitely like that--different in small ways but in many ways the same. Even careers (which are a bit more varied) generally involve a transaction of time and effort in exchange for money.
So I guess what I'm taking away from all of this is that it is easy to get overwhelmed by all of the choices out there, but ultimately it is not worth getting paralyzed with indecision, because the difference between the choices is often splitting hairs. So make a choice.
